Competing on Analytics Webinar with Tom Davenport today at 1:00 PM EST
Posted by Nishith under BI, Data Mining, AnalyticsI recently got an email from James Gardner about Tom Davenport’s Free Webinar being organized today by Aquent in association with the American Marketing Association. Tom Davenport is a consultant and prolific writer (and speaker) on topics related to technology, analytics and data driven strategies.
Tom’s HBR article titled “Competing on Analytics” is based on his profiling of early adopters of Analytics that compete today based on data driven strategies. The research is also expected to be published in a book format in spring 2007.
Tom’s article led to a fairly strong debate in the blogger community. Some see it as learning from the successful experiences, while others point out that while it may be true for the organizations that have been doing analytics for long, it may not factor in some other realities. You can see some of the interesting discussions here: Juice Analytics: 10 Ways Not to Build an Analytics-based Business, Juice Analytics: The Heart of the “Competing on Analytics” Matter, and Neil Raden: Power to the People: Analytics for the Masses.
I’d have liked to get it straight from Tom, but am traveling and wouldn’t be able to make it for the webinar today. If you can, I would recommend that you get it directly from Tom in today’s webinar at 1:00 PM EST. The 45 min webinar is followed by a 15 min Q&A session, so you could get your doubts clarified there. You can register and get more info at http://aquent.com/webinar
Take care…, and do check this blog soon for more tips, tricks and strategies for delivering on the BI promise.

To summarize the argument that Nishith referenced: many experienced analytics folks appeciate Tom D. shining the spotlight on the value of analytics, but feel that he is entirely out of touch with what it takes to help move a company forward in this area. We felt that his study is heavy on platitudes and light on constructive guidance.
FYI: We will be discussing and responding to Tom Davenport’s presentation over here: http://www.juiceanalytics.com/weblog/?p=268
